A MAN FOR ALL SEASONS

by Kimberlynne Darby Newton

I tried my love,
to compare you to a season.
People say that I must choose.
No reason, I vow,
to limit myself or you.
You are sunshine,
dappled and dotted with clouds.
You are what winter's for, wrapping me and our child
in your warm and protected embrace.
You are the cool snap,
heralding cold and snow.
Our fire lover,
who stands between us and the door.
You sunbathed, sun bright, our moth
drawing us ever closer.
The sun, painting you darker,
painting you, a sun catcher,
a jewel-hued prism,
reflecting your ability to take heat and warm strangers.
A sweet smile, so sunny that women
glance and smile back,
though my gimlet eye
discourages that.
Don't you wonder why our boy
pads in for just because kisses.
Or when you catch me staring
unashamedly at you.
You are home, our unforeseen
and miraculous.
A man for all seasons.
